How many 5-letter words are there in each dictionary?

A total of 12,789 five-letter words are valid somewhere. Collins is the widest list at 12,478, while 8,636 pass ENABLE, the open list behind many phone apps. NWL2023, the North American Scrabble list, sits between them at 9,476.

Here is the limitation. 3,289 of the words appear in Collins but in neither NWL2023 nor ENABLE, and most are obscure, such as AIZLE and AJWAN. 311 words miss Collins altogether, including QAJAQ. Check your game's word list before you stake a challenge on a rare entry.

Which five-letter words do people actually know?

About one in five is everyday vocabulary: 2,584 of the 12,789 are common words, and 10,035 carry a dictionary definition. The rest is a long tail of Scrabble-only forms.

Frequency ranking shows how lopsided English gets. ABOUT ranks 43rd among all words, OTHER 71st and HOUSE 174th, while CRANE sits at 7,899 and SLATE at 9,252. Strong Wordle openers are often words you rarely say aloud.

Rarity does not mean invalid. XYLEM ranks 70,591st by frequency, yet all three dictionaries accept it and it scores 17 points, as much as WALTZ.

Which five-letter words does Wordle use as answers?

Wordle holds back 2,315 five-letter words as possible answers. Another 10,413 are accepted as guesses only, which means 12,728 of the 12,789 are playable. Just 61 are rejected.

Letters tell you where to look. E sits in 1,056 answers, then A in 909 and R in 837. A repeated letter shows up in 749 answers, about one in three, in words like GEESE, LLAMA and SASSY.

Behind the top three come O in 673 answers, T in 667, L in 648 and I in 647. That ordering is why openers built from E, A, R, O, T and L feel so effective: each letter is present in roughly a quarter to a half of all solutions.

Which starting word covers the most Wordle answers?

• ADIEU shares at least one letter with 2,153 answers, the most of the openers tested, though it is not an answer itself.
• RAISE reaches 2,147 answers and keeps two consonants, so it sorts positions better than a vowel pile.
• IRATE reaches 2,121 and SLATE 2,094. STARE follows at 2,088.
• CRANE reaches 2,052, about 100 fewer than ADIEU, but it puts three consonants in play.
• Coverage counts letters anywhere, so an all-vowel opener lights up yellows but rarely pins a green.
• Follow a vowel-heavy opener with a consonant-heavy second guess so both halves of the alphabet get tested early.

Why do 3,898 five-letter words end in S?

Plurals and verb forms pile onto the last square. Of the 12,789 words, 3,898 end in S, about 30.5%, in forms like RATES and TEARS.

Wordle's answer list barely follows that pattern. Only 36 answers end in S, while 424 end in E and 364 end in Y. If your last tile is open, E and Y beat S almost every time, because the puzzle avoids simple plurals.

Which letter slots are easiest to predict?

Yes: 8,421 of the 12,789 words have A, E, I, O or U in second place, about two in three. A leads with 2,223, then O with 2,059 and E with 1,605. U holds 1,172 and I holds 1,362.

Among consonants, R is the commonest second letter with 928 words and L follows with 687. A guess like BLITZ or CRANE tests exactly those combinations.

The vowel rule has exceptions. 13 answers contain none of A, E, I, O or U, and every one leans on Y: CRYPT, TRYST, GLYPH and NYMPH are the clearest cases. When your greens and yellows show no vowel, test Y before spending a guess on a fourth consonant.

Which 5-letter words score the most in Scrabble?

Z, J and Q carry the points. Z is worth 10, Q 10 and J 8, so PZAZZ makes 34, JAZZY 33 and QAJAQ 30. FIZZY and FUZZY each make 29, and DIZZY adds 27.

Know the dictionary split before you play them. JAZZY is valid in all three lists, PZAZZ is missing from ENABLE, and QAJAQ is accepted only in NWL2023.

Rare starts help in crosswords. Q opens 79 words and Z opens 105, but X opens only 15, among them XENON and XYLEM. QUICK and QUACK each score 20, so a Q with a U in the rack is worth keeping.
