Two letters is the shortest length any word game accepts, and it is the first list Scrabble players learn by heart. Of the 126 entries, 119 come with a definition. Most are words you already say, such as TO, WE and UP; the rest are oddities that pay off on a crowded board.
Two-letter words at a glance
- Dictionaries accept 126 two-letter words in total: 124 in Collins, 107 in NWL2023 and 96 in ENABLE.
- All 96 ENABLE words also pass in the other two lists, so they are the safest plays in any game.
- O opens 17 words and A opens 16, the two biggest groups. No two-letter word starts with V.
- The average word scores 4.1 points, and 45 of the 126 score only 2.
- QI and ZA are worth 11, the top score for a two-letter word in NWL2023.
Which 2-letter words are valid in every dictionary?
Exactly 96 two-letter words pass in ENABLE, NWL2023 and Collins together. Learn those first and nobody will challenge them off the board.
Do the subtraction and 30 words sit outside ENABLE, so their status depends on the game. Treat ENABLE membership as the green light, and anything else as a word to verify before you play it for real points.
Collins takes 19 that NWL2023 refuses, among them ZO, JA, KY and ST. Play one in a North American club game and it comes off the board when challenged.
The reverse is rare. EW and OK are valid in NWL2023 but missing from Collins, so an international event rejects them. ENABLE also leaves out QI and ZA, which matters if your app runs on that list.
Which 2-letter words score the most points?
- QI and ZA score 11 each: Q or Z at 10 points, plus 1 for the vowel. Both are valid in NWL2023 and Collins.
- ZO also scores 11, but only Collins accepts it.
- AX, EX, OX, XI, XU and JO score 9 apiece and pass in every list.
- JA and KY reach 9 too, but only in Collins.
- Five X words exist. Four pair X with a vowel, and the odd one out is XU.
Two-letter words without a vowel
Five two-letter words contain no A, E, I, O, U or Y: HM, MM, SH, CH and ST. The first three are valid everywhere, while CH and ST are Collins only.
Count Y as a vowel and the group widens. BY and MY pass in every list, while FY, KY and NY are Collins only.
These words rescue a rack heavy with consonants. HM, MM and SH each shed two tiles at once, which matters when the bag has run short of vowels. Keep them in mind late in the game, when the vowels have been drawn.
How many 2-letter words are made only of vowels?
Ten. Five are valid in NWL2023 and Collins: AA, AE, AI, OE and OI. The other five are Collins only: EA, EE, IO, OO and OU.
Two vowels together are the quickest way to unload a rack that holds too many of them. A hand of A, E, I and U plays out in two turns if AE and AI both fit the board. The U is the problem tile, because only OU in Collins pairs it with another vowel.
Why short words win games
Lay a word parallel to one already on the board and every touching pair of tiles must form a valid two-letter word. Hold XU, QI or JO and a premium square beside a vowel becomes a big play.
What the two-letter list looks like
Consonant then vowel is the commonest shape, with 56 words such as BA, HO and MU. Vowel then consonant follows with 50, such as AT, EL and US. Pure vowel pairs and consonant-only words number 10 each.
Those four shapes cover all 126 words. A rack of two consonants has only ten words to draw on, namely HM, MM, SH, BY, MY and the Collins extras CH, FY, KY, NY and ST.
Frequency tells a different story. Of the 126 words, 122 are common enough to rank among the 25,000 most frequent English words. The four that are not are OE, UG, ZA and ZO, which is why they surprise people at the board.
Those four shapes cover all 126 words. A rack with one vowel and one consonant therefore always has a chance of a play, while a rack of two consonants usually needs HM, MM, SH, BY, MY or one of the Collins extras.
Which letters begin and end the most two-letter words?
O opens 17 words, A opens 16 and E opens 13. For endings the order is similar: O closes 17, A closes 15, and I and E close 14 each.
At the thin end, C, Q and R start one word apiece: CH, QI and RE. J, W, X and Z start two each. U starts eight, from UG to UT, and all eight are valid in Collins.
Among consonants, M is the busiest letter in the list, appearing in 12 words. H and Y follow with 11 each. H shows up in AH, EH, HA, HE, HI, HO, OH, UH and the vowelless HM, SH and CH, which is why a spare H is rarely stuck.
How to learn all 2-letter words fast
- Start with the 96 words valid in every list. Most are everyday words, so your ear already knows them.
- Add the ten that carry J, Q, X or Z: JA, JO, QI, XI, XU, ZA, ZO, AX, EX and OX.
- Memorise the ten vowel-only words, then the five with no vowel at all.
- Add the Collins extras last, and only if you play under Collins rules.
- Enter your rack in the Finder to see which two-letter words fit, or step up to 3-letter words when you are ready.
