D words behave differently from most letter groups at the back end. In the Wordle answers, Y is the most common final letter, beating E by a wide margin. The list is also selective: only about one D word in six makes the answer list, so knowing which familiar shapes recur saves guesses.

Why you should test Y at the end of a D word

  • Y ends 33 of the 111 D answers, more than E and T put together at 13 each.
  • Many are plain adjectives such as DIRTY, DUSTY, DAILY and DIZZY.
  • Others are nouns that also end in Y, like diary, dairy, derby and DECOY.
  • Doubled consonants often sit before that Y, as in DADDY, DUMMY and DITTY, so check for a repeat too.

DR and DE split the D answers almost evenly

The second square is close to a coin toss between R and E. DR opens 29 answers, including DRIVE, DREAM and DRINK. DE opens 28, including DEATH, DEPTH and DELAY.

Many DE words begin with a prefix sound, such as DEBUG, DETOX, decay and defer. If the E lands yellow rather than green, I and O are the next most likely second letters, with 17 and 15 answers.

Most D words never appear in Wordle

Collins accepts 650 D words, yet only 111 are Wordle answers. That puts D ninth among first letters for answers, behind F and G, even though both of those have fewer five-letter words overall.

Only 124 of the 650 are common in everyday writing, so the answer list sticks to well-known words. Guess the familiar ones first, like DOUBT, DANCE and DRAFT.

Scrabble players face a similar filter. NWL keeps 470 of the D words and ENABLE keeps 457, so 180 are playable only under Collins, including dzhos. It is the plural of dzho, a cross between a yak and a cow, and it scores 18 points thanks to the Z and H.

5-letter words starting with D with the best scores

DIZZY is the standout at 27 points, valid in every major dictionary and a Wordle answer too. Nothing else comes close: the next D answer by score is DOZEN at 15.

For a single Z, DOOZY and DITZY each give 18 points in NWL and Collins. DAZED and DOZED score 16 and are easy to build from common tiles.
