Of the 36,869 valid 10-letter words, only 1,705 are common, so every long play or fill comes down to building from a root you already know.

A Scrabble rack holds seven tiles, so a ten-letter word needs at least three letters already on the board. That makes these words a middle-game extension play, not a rack-clearing target. Crossword fills reach the same length by stacking suffixes onto shorter roots.

Ten-letter words by the numbers

  • 36,869 ten-letter words are valid in Collins, NWL2023 or ENABLE, and 1,705 of them are common.
  • Collins lists 35,529, NWL2023 lists 25,028 and ENABLE lists 20,302.
  • S opens the most words at 4,235, then C at 3,455 and P at 3,428.
  • E leads the second slot at 5,844, while Y ranks tenth there with 895.
  • The average word scores 16.2 on tiles.

Can you play a 10-letter word in Scrabble?

Yes, but only through letters already on the board. With a seven-tile rack, the most you can lay down is seven tiles plus three board letters. Using all seven tiles still earns the 50-point bonus, and the whole ten-letter word counts toward the score.

Most real plays are smaller. Extend COLLECT to COLLECTING and you place three tiles for 15 points. REQUESTING, built on REQUEST, works the same way and is worth 20.

A ten-letter word can never open a game, because the board is empty and seven tiles is the longest first play. These words belong to the middle game, once open lanes and long words give you something to build on. A quiet three-tile extension can still outscore a short rack dump.

Which suffixes turn a short root into a 10-letter word?

  • S ends 15,471 words, about two in five, and ES ends 5,773, well ahead of ED at 3,085.
  • ING adds three tiles to a seven-letter root. 3,253 ten-letter words end that way, such as REQUESTING.
  • NESS adds four tiles to a six-letter root. 584 words follow the pattern, including BRIGHTNESS.
  • LY adds two tiles to an eight-letter root. 1,252 words end in LY, as in CREATIVELY.
  • ISM adds three tiles to a seven-letter root. 238 words end that way, among them CAPITALISM.
  • ABLE ends 504 words and OUS ends 499, both adjective endings that attach to many shorter roots.

How many 10-letter words do people actually use?

Only 1,705 of the 36,869 are common, roughly one in 22. EARTHQUAKE, COMPLEXITY, MYSTERIOUS and OPERATIONS all sit in that thin slice.

Strip an ING, ED or ES from a ten-letter word and a shorter root usually appears. Spotting that root first, then testing the ending, is faster than scanning the whole length at once.

That leaves 35,164 rarer words, and many of them are a common root plus a standard ending. Learn the roots and the suffix blocks above, and you can read a surprising share of them cold.

Ten different letters is the rare case. Only 2,049 words manage it, and 75 are common, among them BACKGROUND, BLACKSMITH and BIRTHPLACE. Every other long word repeats a letter, so test doubles early.

What do the first two letters tell you?

S, C and P open the most words, at 4,235, 3,455 and 3,428. Together they start about three words in ten. RE opens 1,373, UN opens 1,243 and IN opens 883, nearly one word in ten between them.

The second slot behaves differently. E leads with 5,844, A and O tie at 4,669, and Y still reaches 895. That is why MYSTERIOUS, HYPOTHESIS and GYMNASTICS show up so often in long-word puzzles.

Vowels hold five of the top seven second slots, with N at 3,101 and R at 3,060 taking the other two. Vowels alone fill 21,547 second slots, about 58 percent of the list.

Prefixes narrow it further. DIS opens 493 words, PRE opens 419 and CON opens 408, so a clue with a prefix feel leaves only a few hundred candidates before you add a single crossing.

Rare openers among 10-letter words

  • Q starts 167 words, such as QUESTIONED and QUARANTINE.
  • X starts 54, such as XYLOPHONES, worth 25 with no repeated heavy tile.
  • Z starts 116 and J starts 237, as in ZOOLOGICAL and JOURNALIST.
  • Y starts only 50, with YOURSELVES and YOUNGSTERS the most familiar.
  • Heavy letters hide in the middle: Z sits inside 1,627 ten-letter words and X inside 1,049, far more than start with them.
  • A Q without a U appears in just two words, and only Collins accepts them.

High-scoring 10-letter words you can build

SQUEEZEBOX scores 37 and uses Q, Z and X once each, so a standard bag supplies it, but only NWL2023 accepts it. MAXIMIZING makes 31, JEOPARDIZE 29 and EMPHASIZED 27, while EARTHQUAKE and COMPLEXITY both reach 26.

MOZZARELLA scores 30 but needs a blank for its second Z. RAZZMATAZZ tops the list at 48 with four Zs, which no bag can build, and NWL2023 lists 594 ten-letter words worth 25 or more.

Everyday ten-letter words average 15.6 points, a little under the 16.2 for the whole list. The extra points come from the obscure entries that carry Z, X and Q.

Which dictionary accepts which 10-letter words?

Of the 36,869 words, 35,529 are in Collins, 25,028 are in NWL2023 and 20,302 are in ENABLE. ENABLE therefore recognises just over half. Another 11,817 Collins words are missing from NWL2023, just under a third of the list.

A challenged ten-letter play costs a turn and a lot of tiles. Check your game's word list before you build on an unusual root.

Questions people ask

How many 10-letter words are there?
36,869 ten-letter words pass at least one major dictionary: Collins lists 35,529, NWL2023 lists 25,028 and ENABLE lists 20,302. Only 1,705 of them are common everyday words.
How many tiles does a 10-letter word need in Scrabble?
A ten-letter word needs at least three letters already on the board, since your rack holds only seven tiles. You can place seven tiles through three board letters, or fewer when extending a word, such as adding ING.
What is the highest-scoring 10-letter word?
RAZZMATAZZ scores 48 on tiles, but its four Zs make it impossible to build. SQUEEZEBOX scores 37 with Q, Z and X once each, and MAXIMIZING reaches 31. NWL2023 accepts both of those.
Which 10-letter words have Y as the second letter?
895 ten-letter words have Y in second place. MYSTERIOUS, HYPOTHESIS, SYSTEMATIC and GYMNASTICS are common examples, so Y is worth testing early in a long-word pattern.
Do most 10-letter words end in S?
Not most, but a large share: 15,471 end in S, about two in five. Among longer endings, ES leads with 5,773, then ING with 3,253 and ED with 3,085. NESS, ISM and LY build the long tail.
