Eleven letters is where a seven-tile Scrabble rack runs out of road. Every play at this length leans on tiles already on the board. Crossword fillers and vocabulary builders get the better deal, since the list holds everyday words like INFORMATION and DEVELOPMENT, 1,025 common ones in all.
11-letter words at a glance
- 29,144 words have exactly 11 letters in at least one of ENABLE, Collins or NWL2023.
- S opens the most (3,092), ahead of P (2,926) and C (2,823).
- 12,484 end in S, and G is a distant second at 2,890 because of -ING.
- RAZZAMATAZZ is the top scorer at 49 points; 174 words reach 30 or more.
- Only 1,025 are common words. The other 28,119 are rarer.
How many 11-letter words does each dictionary accept?
Collins accepts 27,893 of them, NWL2023 accepts 18,735 and ENABLE accepts 15,504. All three lists agree on 15,415 words, which is about half of the full total.
The gap is lopsided. 10,345 words appear only in Collins, while 1,251 appear in ENABLE or NWL2023 but not Collins. A North American player who borrows a Collins list will see roughly a third of it rejected. Remember that before you challenge.
The safe pool is the 15,415 words all three lists share. Stay inside it when you do not know the house dictionary, and you will never lose a turn to a challenge.
Which letters start the most 11-letter words?
S, P and C lead by a wide margin, and the next letter down (D) manages only 1,857. The thin end is Y with 31, X with 45 and Z with 69. Those three are the quickest letters to rule in or out, because so few words begin with them.
The second letter is lopsided too. E follows 4,891 openers, about one in six, with O (3,627) and A (3,321) behind it. When a grid gives you two squares, a consonant plus E is the safest first guess.
Prefixes explain the big three. CON opens 451 words, PRE 377, PRO 356 and SUB 251, so a single starter letter can hold thousands of entries.
Why do so many 11-letter words end in S?
- Plurals and verb forms fill the length: 12,484 words end in S, about 43% of the list.
- -ING gives 2,880 endings, such as ENGINEERING and ADVERTISING. -ED gives 2,235, such as ESTABLISHED and ANTICIPATED.
- -LY closes 1,251 words, including IMMEDIATELY. -ITY adds 316, such as OPPORTUNITY.
- -TION ends 641 words, and 512 of those are -ATION, for example APPLICATION and ASSOCIATION.
- Blank final square in a crossword? S is right far more often than E, which ends 2,680 words (about 9%).
Building 11-letter words from prefixes like UN-, RE- and OVER-
At this length a prefix plus a seven-letter stem is the usual recipe. 1,143 words begin with RE and 1,040 with UN, which is why UNDERGROUND and UNNECESSARY sit side by side in any alphabetical run.
Smaller families pay off in puzzles. 399 words begin with OVER, such as OVERWHELMED and OVERLOOKING. 147 begin with UNDER, 251 with SUB and 103 with MICRO.
Stripping a prefix is the fastest way to test a candidate. If the remaining seven letters are a word, the answer is probably right.
Filling an 11-letter crossword entry
Long answers reward ending-first thinking. Pencil in S, then test -ING, -ED and -LY against the crossing letters before you touch the middle.
Common words keep the odds friendly. PERFORMANCE, OPPORTUNITY and COMPETITION are all among the 1,025 common entries, so a setter reaching for a long answer lands on them first. The 28,119 others usually need crossings to confirm.
After S, the most likely last letters are G (2,890), E (2,680), D (2,412) and Y (2,329). Y closes adverbs and nouns such as IMMEDIATELY and OPPORTUNITY, so a crossing that says Y points straight at the -LY and -ITY families. Count those against your other squares before you commit.
Which 11-letter words do people actually use?
The 1,025 common words, ranked by frequency, start with INFORMATION, DEVELOPMENT, PERFORMANCE and ASSOCIATION. INTERESTING, IMMEDIATELY and SIGNIFICANT follow close behind.
Plurals thin out in this group. 265 of the 1,025 end in S, about one in four, against 43% across the whole list. Everyday vocabulary leans on singular nouns, adjectives and adverbs, so skip the S-first rule when a clue sounds like ordinary speech.
Scores stay modest too. FLEXIBILITY reaches 26 on the strength of its X, worth 8 points, and no common word needs more. Big totals at this length come from obscure Z and Q words.
Which 11-letter words score the most in Scrabble?
RAZZAMATAZZ scores 49, QUIZZIFYING 45 and QUIZZICALLY 43. Z carries most of that: each Z tile is worth 10 points, and RAZZAMATAZZ holds four of them. QUIZZIFYING is Collins-only, so in NWL2023 and ENABLE games QUIZZICALLY is the runner-up to RAZZAMATAZZ.
Z is the rare letter you will meet most. 1,463 words contain one, and 1,082 of those carry IZE or IZI, as in EMPHASIZING. X shows up in 852 words, Q in 498 and J in 341.
Everyday words top out much lower. OBJECTIVELY and QUARTERBACK reach 28, so ordinary tiles will not beat 30 here.
You cannot play any of these from a seven-tile rack alone. Hook onto four letters on the board, use all seven tiles and the 50-point bonus lands on top.
