9-letter words

Nine letters is where answers stop yielding to the clue alone and start falling to the crossings. Once three or four squares are filled, the pattern narrows fast. Only 2,426 of these words are common, so letter logic does more of the work than vocabulary.

How do you solve a 9-letter crossword answer?

1. Write a final S first when the clue is plural. 16,180 words end that way, nearly four in ten.
2. Test a suffix block next: ES (4,980), ED (3,551) and ING (3,326) each cover several hundred possibilities at once.
3. Check the opening letter. S, C or P starts about three words in ten, so crossings on those squares pay off.
4. Put a vowel second. E, A or O takes that slot in more than 17,000 words.
5. Send the pattern to the Finder, with blanks for unknown squares, and read the short list it returns.

Which endings repeat most in 9-letter words?

• ES ends 4,980 words, as in SENTENCES, and ED ends 3,551, as in DESCRIBED.
• ING ends 3,326 words, among them BEGINNING, and LY ends 1,044, such as CAREFULLY.
• NESS ends 558 words, led by HAPPINESS, and ABLE ends 439, as in AVAILABLE.
• OUS ends 404 words like DANGEROUS, while LESS ends 317 like COUNTLESS.
• ISM ends 257 words, including criticism, so a clue about a belief or movement often fits.

Which openings begin the most 9-letter words?

RE opens 1,509 nine-letter words and UN opens 1,157, well ahead of IN at 731. REMAINDER, UNCERTAIN and INTENTION show the shapes. Not every RE or UN is a true prefix, but the letter pair narrows a grid just the same.

DIS opens 360 words, such as DISCOVERY, and OVER opens 374. Together these five openings cover about 4,100 words, roughly one in ten of the list.

Rare openers give short lists. X starts 44 words, Y starts 90, Z starts 157 and Q starts 211. Z shows up somewhere inside 1,478 words, though, so a Z in the middle of a pattern is far likelier than one at the front.

Do 9-letter words usually repeat a letter?

Yes. Only 4,804 of the 41,930 use nine different letters, roughly one in nine, and just 283 of those are common. ABDUCTION, ALGORITHM and BEHAVIORS are typical survivors.

10,075 words carry a doubled pair side by side, about one in four. When two crossing squares stay empty, test a double before you rule out a letter.

The share barely moves for everyday vocabulary. 283 of the 2,426 common words use nine different letters, about 12 percent, against 11 percent overall. Repeats are the rule whether the clue points to a plain word or an odd one.

Is there a 9-letter word with no vowel?

No. None of the 41,930 lacks A, E, I, O and U. Only 52 contain exactly one, and many borrow Y to carry the sound, such as SPRIGHTLY, SYNCHRONY and STYLISHLY.

STRENGTHS is the lone common word in that group, so a nine-letter answer with a single vowel and plenty of consonants should start with it. It is also the only nine-letter word that ends in five straight consonants, if you count Y as a vowel.

Four consonants in a row at the end is a wider net: 86 words match, including INSTINCTS. Spot that cluster in a grid pattern and the list shrinks from tens of thousands to under a hundred.

High-scoring 9-letter words in Scrabble

A bingo at this length needs two tiles already on the board, since your rack holds seven. EXCHEQUER scores 30, FREQUENCY 26 and HIJACKING 26, and each uses a heavy tile once. PAPARAZZI reaches 31 but needs a blank for its second Z.

NWL2023 lists 396 nine-letter words worth 25 or more. The ceiling is PIZZAZZES at 47, which needs three blanks, one more than a bag holds. Heavy letters appear without doubling too: X sits in 1,056 words, J in 614 and Q in 693.

Q without QU is rare at this length. Nine valid words have one, and mbaqangas, worth 23, is the only one NWL2023 accepts.

Which dictionary accepts which 9-letter words?

ENABLE accepts 24,873 of the 41,930, under three fifths of the list, while Collins accepts 40,727. That leaves 10,697 words that NWL2023 rejects but Collins allows, so long-word lists vary more between games than short ones do.

The gap runs both ways. 1,199 words, such as STEAMPUNK and SMACKDOWN, sit in NWL2023 but not in Collins, many of them newer coinages. A word that is safe in one app can be a loss in another.

Treat a long, odd-looking word with suspicion. Roughly one in seventeen is common, and the rest can fail in the wrong game, so check your game's word list first.
