Three letters is where most Scrabble turns are won: short enough to squeeze in anywhere, long enough to score. Of the 1,333 words, 737 are everyday English such as THE, AND and YOU, and 1,111 have a definition. Pick a starting letter from the lists, or read on for the plays that matter.
Three-letter words at a glance
- Collins accepts 1,292 three-letter words, NWL2023 accepts 1,085 and ENABLE accepts 972.
- A starts the most words at 93, ahead of S at 90 and P at 76. Q starts just 3 and X just 2.
- S and E tie as the commonest last letters, ending 108 words each.
- A vowel sits in the middle of 1,006 words, roughly three in four.
- The average word scores 6.3 points, and 88 of them score 12 or more.
Which 3-letter words score the most in Scrabble?
In NWL2023 and ENABLE, ZAX is the top play that needs no blank, with 19 points: Z at 10, A at 1, X at 8. ZEK follows at 16, then FEZ, PYX and WIZ at 15 apiece. All four pass in NWL2023, Collins and ENABLE.
Some entries look bigger than they play. ZZZ lists at 30, but a standard set holds one Z, so two blanks drop it to 10. ZUZ lists at 21 and plays for 11 with one blank.
Easier points come from ZAP and ZIP at 14, and from J words such as JAB at 12 or JAW at 13. Neither needs a blank.
At the other end, 203 words score 3 points or fewer, filler plays such as ANT, ATE and SIT. They rarely win a game alone, but they clear tiles and keep the board open for a 12-point play on the next turn.
How many 3-letter words have a vowel in the middle?
Some 1,006 of the 1,333, about three in four. A leads with 261, then O with 239, E with 198, I with 166 and U with 142.
Consonant, vowel, consonant is the classic shape and covers 824 words, more than six in ten. TAN, SIT and BOX all follow it.
When the middle letter is a consonant, R is the favourite with 52 words, as in ARE and ERA. Y comes next with 32, including AYE, BYE and DYE, and H follows with 30.
All-vowel words are scarce. Only four exist: EAU, AIA, AUA and AUE. EAU is valid everywhere, and the other three are Collins only.
Q, X and J words that need no help
- Four words contain Q: QAT, QUA, QIS and SUQ. QAT and QIS need no U.
- QAT and QUA score 12 each, from Q at 10 plus two single-point letters.
- Only two words start with X: XIS, valid everywhere, and XED, which only NWL2023 takes.
- Some 50 words contain an X, such as FAX, HEX and VEX, each worth 13.
- Just three words end in J: HAJ, RAJ and TAJ. Thirty-five words contain a J in total.
Three-letter words with no vowels
Thirteen words contain none of A, E, I, O, U or Y. Seven pass in every dictionary: BRR, CWM, HMM, NTH, PHT, SHH and TSK. CWM, a mountain hollow, scores 10.
The other six split. PST and ZZZ pass in NWL2023 and Collins, TWP is Collins only, and GRR, MMM and PWN are NWL2023 only.
Treat Y as a vowel and 44 words have no A, E, I, O or U, from CRY to WHY. Those are the escape hatch for a rack that is all consonants.
Which 3-letter words differ between dictionaries?
Collins accepts 247 three-letter words that NWL2023 rejects, and NWL2023 accepts 40 that Collins rejects. ENABLE is the strictest, missing 361 of the 1,333.
Collins-only plays include AIA, ZEX and ZIZ. Lay ZEX in a North American club game, where it scores 19, and it comes off the board when challenged.
The NWL2023-only list is shorter and odder: GRR, MMM, PWN and XED. If a word is in ENABLE you can play it anywhere, and for everything else check your game's list first.
Which 3-letter words read the same backwards?
The list holds 69 palindromes, led by family words and sounds: DAD, MOM, MUM, POP, BOB, DID, WOW and EYE. NON is Collins only.
A palindrome needs only two different tiles, so DID or EYE can come from a rack with a single repeated letter. Fifty of the 69 appear in ENABLE.
Only two words repeat one letter three times: ZZZ and MMM. Both are valid in NWL2023.
Which letters start and end the most 3-letter words?
After A (93) and S (90), the biggest starters are P with 76, T with 72, O with 71 and D with 69. The thinnest are Q (3), X (2), Z (24), I (26) and U (28).
The awkward letters open more words than their reputation suggests: W starts 46, K starts 39, Y starts 38, V starts 31 and J starts 30.
Endings are more lopsided. S and E close 108 words each, T closes 93, N closes 85, D closes 77 and G closes 76. Keep an S in your rack and it can finish dozens of short words.
How to use 3-letter words in a game
- Learn the Z, X, J and Q group first: ZAX, ZEK, FEZ, QAT and XIS cover most of the points.
- Keep EAU in mind for a vowel-heavy rack. It is the only all-vowel word valid in every list.
- Memorise the seven vowelless words valid everywhere, so a rack of consonants never forces a pass.
- Pair a high-scoring tile with a premium square: ZAX on a double-letter Z scores 29, against 19 on a plain square.
- Enter your tiles in the Finder to see every 3-letter word they make, or move up to 4-letter words.
