The next smallest lists are Q at 79 words and Z at 105, so X is a genuine outlier rather than a crowded letter. Where the X points come from

Xerox is both the most familiar word and the best scorer, worth 19 points. Only xylyl at 18 and xylem and xylic at 17 come close, and the list then falls to 16 for xebec. Xylan, xylol, xysti and xysts all settle on 15.

Those names look exotic because most of them are. Xebec is a small sailing ship, xylan is a plant fibre, and xysti and xysts are covered walkways, so the group rewards players who already know the odd corners of the dictionary.
