A final J is one of the rarest endings in English. At five letters you get a single related pair, both from Arabic. They sit in Collins, the international word list, and in neither ENABLE nor NWL2023, so the first question is always which dictionary your game uses.
The two words ending in J
- AFLAJ and FALAJ are the only five-letter words that end in J.
- Collins lists both; ENABLE and NWL2023 list neither.
- Each scores 15 points: J is worth 8, F is worth 4 and the other three tiles are worth 1 each.
- Neither is a Wordle answer, but both are allowed guesses.
- Neither ranks among the top 25,000 English words by frequency.
What do AFLAJ and FALAJ mean?
A falaj is a traditional irrigation channel, used in Oman and nearby regions to carry water from a source to farmland. AFLAJ is its plural. The two words use the same five letters, so one is an anagram of the other.
Since both share A, A, F, L and J, whichever you play opens the same scoring pattern. Their meaning is specialist, so most opponents will not know either word.
Why do so few words end in J?
English avoids a final J, so the few survivors are almost always borrowings. Three-letter words ending in J number 3 and four-letter words number 3 as well, while six-letter words number 2. Five letters brings only AFLAJ and FALAJ.
Among five-letter endings, J is the thinnest of all. Q and V each end 4 words, and J ends only 2, so no other final letter has fewer. Z, the next rarest after those three, ends 33.
The three-letter examples are the familiar ones: HAJ, RAJ and TAJ. They are accepted in all three major dictionaries, unlike the five-letter pair.
Playing a J-ending word on the board
Each word scores 15 before bonuses, built on a heavy 8-point J. A double-letter square under the J takes the total to 23, and a triple-word square would multiply the full 15 by three, giving 45.
The word needs a lane that leaves the final square open, since the J falls at the end. Hold the J, the F and the two As and you have a rare, but legal, high scorer in Collins games. Since there are only two words, you can memorise the whole set in a few seconds.
Limitation
Both words are Collins-only, so they fail in North American games. Check your game's word list before holding a J for them.
