10-letter words with Z as the 2nd letter

Z holds second place in only 15 ten-letter words, and not one of them counts as common vocabulary. Ten finish in S, and the average score is 23.7, the highest of any second-letter list at this length. Most entries are scientific or borrowed words.

Why A and O open 11 of the 15

Six words begin with A: azobenzene, azeotropic, azeotropes, azotaemias, azygospore and azedarachs. Five more begin with O, among them ozonolysis, ozokerites and ozonations. Ozonolysis and ozokerites share the OZO- opening with ozocerites.

That leaves one C, one D, one I and one T start, so a grid with Z in the second square should try A or O first. The vowels set up the AZ- and OZ- shapes that carry the whole list.

Ozocerites and ozokerites are near-variants, which is worth knowing when a grid accepts one spelling but not the other.

Borrowed words fill the rest

Four entries lean on Slavic or Turkic spellings: czarevitch, tzarevitch, dziggetais and izvestiyas. Their Z sits directly after C, T, D or I rather than a vowel.
