Almost every match is a verb form closing in ED, from ACTED and ACHED through ECHED, ICHED and YCLED. With D fixed in the last slot and C in the second, only three tiles can move, which holds the group to 18 words. A and S each open six of them, and the rest begin with Y, E, I or O.
The C-second, D-last set in five lines
- Eighteen matches appear in at least one tournament dictionary.
- Collins carries all 18, NWL2023 13 and ENABLE 12.
- Six words share the top score of 11, led by ACHED.
- A and S start 6 words each; Y starts 3 more.
- Only 9 of the 18 carry a definition, and ACTED alone is common.
Why so many entries end in ED
Past-tense verbs explain the shape. ACTED and ACHED are the easy reads, while ECHED, ICHED and YCLED repeat the frame with a different opening vowel. Fixing C in the second slot leaves only one square ahead of it, which is the real reason the group stays at 18.
Scots spellings supply the true outliers, YCLAD and YCOND, which share the Y opening but abandon the ED ending. Both are Collins-only, and both climb into the top score group because Y is worth 4 points.
How the Scrabble scores spread
Six words tie for first on 11 points: ACHED, ECHED, ICHED, YCLAD, YCLED and YCOND. The next group, ACTED, SCOLD, ACRID and SCALD, reaches 8. No gap between the leaders exceeds the value of one H or Y tile.
The set averages 9 points and uses no J, Q, X or Z, so a huge turn is unlikely. When a clue fixes C second and D last, expect a dependable mid-range score rather than a board-breaking one. SCOLD and SCALD are the two easiest 8-point picks to remember.
Watch the dictionary gap
ENABLE lists 12 of the 18 while NWL2023 lists 13, leaving several matches Collins-only. Confirm your game's word list before you play a form such as SCAUD or YCOND.
