7-letter words with U as the 2nd letter and W as the 7th letter

W-final words are rare in English, and with U in second place just 17 survive. Over half of them are OUT- verbs built on a short verb that ends in W, such as GROW, FLOW and DRAW. Learn that one rule and the list becomes nearly predictable.

How do the OUT- words pair up?

Several come in present and past pairs. OUTGROW and OUTGREW, OUTDRAW and OUTDREW, OUTFLOW and OUTFLEW all fit, and each pair differs only in the vowel before the W.

OUTGLOW, OUTCROW and OUTGNAW complete the OUT- family, and -LOW is the biggest tail in the whole frame with 5 words: OUTFLOW, OUTGLOW, SUNGLOW, MUDFLOW and QUILLOW. OUTFLOW and OUTGROW are the ones that show up in real writing, though neither ranks as common.

What about words that do not start with OUT?

MUDFLOW and SUNGLOW pair a short noun with a W-ending word, and both read as ordinary compounds. MUDSCOW, worth 15, is the odd one, and NWL2023 does not take it. PURVIEW and SURVIEW share an -IEW ending, with PURVIEW the better known and the only one of the two accepted in NWL2023 and ENABLE.

QUILLOW is a curiosity worth 19 that only NWL2023 accepts. BUCKSAW scores 18 and CUMSHAW 17, and both are valid in all three lists.
