R then a free letter then L is a very productive shape, because it builds the stem of a long run of verbs. Add -ES or -ED and you get 64 of the 174 words. The remaining 110 are a mixed bag of plurals, adverbs and a few Z-heavy curiosities.
The __R_L__ frame in brief
- 174 words fit, and 15 of them are common English.
- 133 have a definition, and the average score is 10.4.
- A is the second letter in 42 words, U in 38 and O in 33.
- S ends 62 words, D ends 32 and R ends 17.
- PERPLEX tops the scores at 18, with JURALLY on 17.
Why do -LES and -LED dominate?
Because the fifth-place L is often the last letter of a stem. Add -ES and you get CIRCLES, TURTLES, HURDLES and MARBLES; add -ED and you get circled, marbled, garbled and paroled. The -LES group has 33 words and -LED has 31.
Next come -LER with 15, such as warbler, and -LLS with 12, such as THRILLS and scrolls. -LET also has 12, and -LLY has 8 with MORALLY among them. The -LLY group has 8 words, and morally is the typical adverb.
What is the ZORIL- trio?
ZORILLA, ZORILLE and ZORILLO are three spellings of the same African animal, and each scores 16 because of the single Z worth 10. They sit just below perplex and jurally.
JIRBLED also reaches 17 with its J, which makes the J and Z words worth knowing if your game accepts Collins. Most players will find perplex, with its X worth 8, far easier to build from an ordinary rack.
Outside the top scorers the frame is plain English: gorilla, corolla, airplay and airflow are all fair play.
Dictionary check
Collins takes 173 of the 174, NWL2023 takes 133 and ENABLE takes 127. Look up ZORILLE and JIRBLED in your game's word list before playing.
