The OP pair sits in the middle, and it pulls in two big families: the -OPS plurals, from STOPS and SHOPS to DROPS, CROPS and PROPS, and the -OPE words, SCOPE, SLOPE, TROPE, ELOPE and STOPE. A third group ends in -OPY, giving LOOPY, GOOPY, POOPY, WOOPY and MYOPY. Seven are Wordle answers.
The O-third, P-fourth group at a glance
- 52 words match the pattern.
- 29 end in S, 8 in Y and 8 in E.
- S opens 14 words, C 5, and G, M and P four each.
- 7 are Wordle answers and 13 count as common.
- QUOPS leads on 16 and MYOPY on 15.
Why the S ending dominates
The final S accounts for 29 of the 52 words, and most are plain plurals on an -OP stem: STOPS, SHOPS, DROPS, CROPS, PROPS, LOOPS, HOOPS, CHOPS and FLOPS. The tail of that group is rarer, with MYOPS, KNOPS and QUOPS.
Most of those S endings come from verbs players already know. STOP, SHOP, DROP, CROP, PROP, LOOP, HOOP, CHOP and FLOP each gain a plural or third-person S, which is why the pattern feels so familiar once the middle OP is fixed.
The -OPE and -OPY tails
Eight words end in E, and seven of them are the -OPE set: SCOPE, SLOPE, TROPE, ELOPE, MYOPE, STOPE and SHOPE. Six are everyday verbs or nouns, with MYOPE and STOPE the odd ones out.
Eight more end in Y, the -OPY adjectives: LOOPY, GOOPY, POOPY, WOOPY, ROOPY, SLOPY, ATOPY and MYOPY. ATOPY is the clinical one; the rest lean playful, which is why only a few count as common.
Play the middle pair, not the ends
Because O and P are locked in the middle, the first and fifth squares decide everything. S opens fourteen words, so start there and keep the -OPE group in reserve for when an E shows up.
