The X words carry the scoring
No other pattern in the middle-L family leans so hard on the X tile. KYLIX hits 19, CYLIX and XYLIC 17, HELIX 15, and CALIX, BOLIX and OXLIP 14, so a single X pushes a word near the top. SALIX and HYLIC complete the eight X spellings.
The IC endings are the quieter family. Words like COLIC, RELIC, MALIC and FOLIC close on C, and ten such words end that way, while fourteen close on S.
Only nine Wordle answers sit in this set
Wordle uses this pattern sparingly. BELIE, FOLIO, HELIX, RELIC, SOLID, SPLIT, TULIP, UNLIT and VALID are the nine answers, and they are among the most familiar words in the list.
Collins lists 69 of the 72 spellings and NWL2023 just 50, so twenty-two words fail on a North American board and nearly a third of the list is Collins-only. ENABLE is stricter still, dropping to 43.
Playing the IX ending
An X at the end of a five-letter word is worth chasing, so KYLIX, CYLIX and HELIX belong in any Scrabble line. In Wordle, though, X rarely falls, so treat these as scoring plays rather than guesses.
