How the matching works

This tool matches by spelling, not sound: words that share the last three letters come first, then words that share the last two. Spelling is a good start for rhymes, but English has plenty of exceptions, so read the list aloud before you use it.

A worked example: CRANE

CRANE ends in -ANE. The everyday words with the same ending include PLANE, LANE, JANE, INSANE, KANE, AIRPLANE, MEMBRANE. Most of those rhyme with CRANE, but not all of them: read each one aloud.

Where spelling and sound part ways

  • Same letters, different sound. SOLDIER ends like PIER and TIER, but they do not rhyme.
  • Same sound, different letters. CRANE rhymes with RAIN and REIGN, which this tool will not find, because their spelling differs.
  • Stress matters. A true rhyme matches from the last stressed vowel, so two words with the same final letters can still fall flat.

For word games the spelling match is often what you want: Scrabble and Wordle care about letters, not sounds. The Word Finder can also fix the last letters of a word of any length.

Questions people ask

Are these real rhymes?
Not always. The tool matches spelling, so most results rhyme but some only share letters. Read them aloud to check.
Which words does it search?
Words in ENABLE, Collins (older SOWPODS edition) and NWL2023, common words first.
Can I find rhymes by sound?
Not here yet. For sound-based rhymes, think of other spellings of the same sound and search those endings too.
